The client

Fence Builders USA is a licensed residential and commercial fencing company on Silvermine Road in Seymour, Connecticut. The team installs, repairs and replaces privacy fencing, picket fencing and security fencing for homeowners and businesses across the state, backed by a written warranty and financing options.

This fence SEO case study covers what happened when a capable contractor with a well built site stopped being buried in search results and started owning the map across its service area.

The challenge

Search Console framed the problem clearly. Across the preceding period, the site averaged position 32.6, which is roughly page four of results. Fence Builders was in the index, but not in the places a homeowner ever scrolls to.

Southern Connecticut is a dense, competitive fencing market. Seymour sits between New Haven, Waterbury and the Naugatuck Valley towns, which means a fence contractor there is not competing against a handful of neighbors. It is competing against every established contractor in three overlapping metros at once, most of them with years of local reviews and local links already banked.

A site sitting at position 32.6 in that market is invisible in practice. Local SEO for fence companies is decided in a small number of high intent local searches, and Fence Builders was not yet competitive in them.

The problem in one line
Fence Builders needed to stop being a site that Google knew about and start being the result a Connecticut homeowner actually sees when they go looking for a fence. Everything below follows from that.

The strategy

Fence contractor SEO works best in a specific order. The work followed the sequence that produces fence leads soonest, rather than the one that looks busiest.

  • Google Business Profile first, and hard. For a fence contractor, the map pack is where the jobs begin. A homeowner searches, taps one of the top three and calls. GBP optimization for fence installers came before anything else: correct primary category, complete services and service areas across the Naugatuck Valley and the New Haven side, and a profile kept genuinely active rather than filled in once and abandoned.
  • Made the website work as hard as the profile. Good fence company website design is not decoration. The estimate form sits above the fold, the phone number appears in the top bar and again in the hero, and the service area, FAQ, financing and warranty pages answer the questions that decide whether a homeowner calls. Name, address and phone match the Google Business Profile exactly.
  • Focused the site on terms that produce work. Rather than chasing a long tail of searches that never convert, the fence content strategy concentrated on the services and towns that generate fence jobs, so each page had a specific job to do instead of competing for everything at once.
  • Built local relevance. Local directories, citations and the kind of placements that reinforce a business as a genuine Connecticut fixture rather than a name in a database.
  • Tracked Google Maps SEO for fence contractors from the whole service area. A map ranking changes depending on where the searcher is standing, so tracking runs from a grid of coordinates spanning the service area on an ongoing basis. That is what turns fence GBP results into something measurable rather than something claimed.

Result: 88 percent of the service area at high visibility

We track ten commercial fence keywords across a grid of coordinates spanning the Seymour service area, refreshed on an ongoing basis. Each pin is a real search run from a real location. Green stars are number one rankings.

Across the grid for “fence contractor”, Fence Builders holds high visibility across 88 percent of the service area at an average rank of 2.24. The remaining 12 percent sits in the middle of the map. Low visibility is zero, and the share of the grid where the business fails to appear at all is zero. A homeowner searching anywhere in this service area finds Fence Builders, and in most of it they find them at or near the top.

Lower is better. Every keyword shown averages inside the top four across the entire grid, and the ten keyword campaign average sits at 3.37.

And the trend is still improving

Because tracking has been running continuously, we can see direction rather than a single snapshot. Across the completed scans since tracking began, the campaign average has improved from 4.47 to 3.37, and the most recent completed scan is the strongest the campaign has recorded.

That is the pattern worth having. The rankings are not a spike that arrived and faded, they are compounding as local signals accumulate.

Result: organic clicks up 76 percent

The map pack drives the calls. Organic search drives the trust and the long tail. Both moved. This is first party data, straight from Google Search Console, comparing the recent period against the preceding period of equal length.

The number that actually matters
Average position moved 7.4 places, from 32.6 to 25.2. In a market as dense as southern Connecticut that shift is what took clicks from 803 to 1,410 in the same window, a 76 percent increase in homeowners actually arriving on the site rather than simply seeing it listed somewhere they never scroll to.

Result: twelve keywords now rank in the top three

Independent third party tracking shows where the organic gains are concentrated. The site now holds twelve keywords in the top three positions, the most it has ever recorded, and roughly triple where it sat a quarter earlier.

Keywords held in positions one to ten over time. The climb at the right of the chart is the current period.

Fewer, better, and that is the point
Top three positions are where the clicks live. Twelve keywords sitting there is worth more to a fence contractor than hundreds of rankings buried on page five, and it is the organic half of what the map is already doing across the service area.
